If you’re reading this, you’re probably of legal age and have had a drink or two (or five) at a bar. Crazy fun night and nights you can’t remember have probably happened in a bar. Don’t expect the certified bartender to tolerate you when you get them angry. Here are some ways to avoid the bartender giving you the glare, or worse a watered-down drink because of your actions.
1. A huge dollop of PDA. Yes, we know you’re in love and crazy for each other. However, making out at the bar, while ordering won’t exactly get you brownie points. Better take it somewhere else- like a hotel.
2. Don’t get angry. Anger takes you nowhere and can just frustrate you. Bartenders may ignore you because of your anger. If it’s a busy night, wait your turn and wait patiently.
3. If the drink’s not on the Drink Menu, don’t order it. Bartenders are not wizards or psychics who know every drink on the planet. They will most likely not know the special drink you got served in the other bar you went to.
4. Don’t hit on the bartender. The line you probably thought was the best in the whole world? They’ve heard it. If it’s a busy night, let the bartender do their job. Be respectful and polite.
5. Don’t let the bartender pick your drink – and not like it. As a bartender on a busy night it’s not easy to choose one drink in a menu of dozens. It would be better to make a decision on what you want and then order.
6. Don’t leave a mess behind. It’s not easy to serve drinks and have to clean up at the same time.
7. Know when to use cash or leave a tab open. Use cash as much as possible when ordering one or three drinks at a time. Avoid using change when paying; counting coins can take up more time. If you’re planning to stay for quite some time or have a large number of people, open up a tab.
8. Don’t drop names. Bartenders probably know the manager too. If you really know the person, they’ll introduce you to the bartender.
9. Don’t NOT Tip. If you’re having a big tab or a regular customer, be sure to tip well. Tipping is a standard, especially if the service is well.
10. Bad behavior. Two words. Kicked. Out.
